5 tips to help your child

Posted by EFSurabayaKayun On July - 2 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

Here is some simple and practical advice to help your child make the most out of their time at EF Surabaya Kayun. Please remember that you can always ask your child’s teacher, if you need any further help or advice.

  1. Make mistakes – A common worry for our students, is making mistakes. However, making mistakes can be a vital study tool and help development. We all learn by making mistakes and then we try not to make the mistake again. When we were children, learning to walk meant falling down and bumping ourselves, until eventually we worked out how to balance ourselves and walk. Learning a language is the same; students make mistakes, the teacher corrects them and we learn from that. Please reassure your child that EF Surabaya Kayun making mistakes is fine, as long as the students learns from this, and that nothing bad is going to happen.
  2. Be active – In our daily lives, most of our communication is spoken. Studies have proven that students who are active and communicate, make the fastest and greatest progress. At EF Surabaya Kayun, the focus of our courses is on spoken communication, so for your child to make the most progress possible, it is highly important that they participate in all class activities.
  3. Speak English everywhere – It is difficult for students to study English in a non-English speaking country. In an English speaking country you are constantly surrounded by English, from conversations in shops, to signs and television. This leads to the student being immersed in English. In Indonesia, there is not this level of exposure. However, by encouraging your child to always speak English at EF Surabaya Kayun, in and outside the class with his or her friends, we can increase the exposure and repetition required to learn the language faster. If you have two children at EF Surabaya Kayun, encourage them to speak English to each other or if you have friends who also have children studying at EF Surabaya Kayun, make them speak to each other in English. This will help greatly in your child’s development.
  4. At home – We understand that not all parents speak English. However, this is not a problem and there are many practical ideas that you can do to help your child. Homework is given regularly at EF Surabaya Kayun and it is a vital part of your child’s studies, because it aids in reinforcing the language taught in the classroom. Reading is the best tool avaialble for increase your child’s vocabulary. Comic books and children’s stories can be easily found in bookstores across Surabaya. In addition to this there are many websites on the Internet that have a excellent resources for children. Please see our useful links page for more details. Television and computer games can also be useful tools to help your child. Where possible children should watch the programme in English with English subtitles. Children are very quick learners and they can soak up a great deal of language and vocabulary just by watching it on TV.
  5. Talk to us – If you have any concerns, feedback, comments or you would like further help, please talk to your teacher. We are always happy to help. You can find details on how to contact EF English First Surabaya Kayun here.
